Trails and Tributaries of the Sausal Creek Watershed

November 2010: The Trails and Tributaries of the Sausal Creek Watershed map has been updated and reprinted. Download revised map (.pdf, 6.3mb).

This map, created and updated by long-time volunteer and computer wizard Karen Paulsell, was originally published in December 2007. Karen began by using the map created by Janet Sowers for the Oakland Museum's creek map of Oakland and Berkeley. One of her original goals was to get an accurate trail map that would provide a basis for mapping the rare plants of the watershed. She set her GPS into "track mode" on seed collecting hikes. Sausal Trails MapWhere things just didn't look right, intrepid Karen walked into the deep ravines of the watershed and added new creek segments that have year-round water!

Any effort this complex takes lots of help. Karen developed a park map for the Joaquin Miller Park Working Group (now the Friends of Joaquin Miller Park) and received very useful feedback that shaped her final map overlays. GreenInfo Network transferred the data into Adobe Illustrator format and her friend Louis Jaffe volunteered a tremendous amount of work to make the map look beautiful and prepare it for offset printing. The Friends of Sausal Creek are grateful to these volunteers for "putting us on the map" and to Tyko Cvar for "putting us out there." Tyko, an Eagle Scout, built and installed 10 map boxes. They donated the labor and materials allowing us to print more first-run maps than budgeted.

Special thanks to volunteer designer Cheryl Koehler for skillfully laying out the updated trail map brochure.

We hope this map will encourage people to explore the extremely interesting but less familiar parts of the watershed; will motivate folks to volunteer to help FOSC maintain the trails; and will inspire residents to do their part to help keep creeks healthy.

Thanks to the Alameda Countywide Clean Water Program for funding the printing of this map!
